Match recap vs. High Point: 12/7
Sparta, NJ - Sparta Lanes was the setting on Thursday afternoon for a crucial match between the Jefferson Township HS Falcon bowling team & the team from High Point HS, with the Falcons winning with identical 5-2 scores for both varsity & JV. The Falcons inaugural season has been a complete success so far, with wins over Hopatcong & Vernon & a respectable showing against Sparta. In a surprise move to the varsity squad by coach DiRupo, leadoff bowler Jose Diaz & anchorman Brian Koch were switched. This switch had instant results, with the team winning the 1st game, shooting 1074; high game for the team this season. Koch paced the team in the 1st game with a 225 & Craig Wallace added a 183. Three bowlers on the varsity squad shot over 600 for the three game series (Diaz (690), Laura Ackerson (626) & Mark Hueber (629)). The team struggled in the 2nd game & lost a close match, 968-944 with Ackerson & Diaz pacing the team with games of 205 & 202, respectively. The 3rd game brought the team back into form, beating HP 1028-944. Diaz again paced the team with a tremendous effort, stroking 8 strikes in a row during his 264 game while Ackerson & Hueber added identical 209 games. The varsity team now has a record of 3-1 overall with their next match this Monday (12/11) against Wallkill Valley. The JV squad started off solid against High Point, with a 774-702 win. The team was led by leadoff man Jay Holodynsky’s 167 game, along with Connor Kroll’s 154 & anchorman Nick Miller’s 212. The second game was the most highly contested of the year for either squad. Steve Tanis came through with clutch shots during a solid 154 game, while the bowling of Miller & Danielle VanSyckle pulled them within striking range in the 10th frame. VanSyckle stroked two strikes in the 10th for a 148 game, while Miller’s two strikes & 214 game brought them up just short, losing 742-741. The 3rd game brought upon a storm, ‘the quiet storm’ known as Heather Van Dyk. Van Dyk, subbing for Kroll without any practice shots, let her bowling do the talking while stroking six straight strikes during her career high game of 215. The JV squad easily beat High Point in the 3rd game 886-749, with solid performances by Miller (195), Holodynsky (174), VanSyckle (156) & Tanis (146). The JV team also has a record of 3-1 overall with their next match this Monday (12/11) against Wallkill Valley.

Match blogs for 2006-07 season Jefferson vs. High Point: 1/10 After a rough three games against Sparta on Monday, the JV team bounced back & took all three games against High Point. Craig had a solid series with a 621, as did Jay with his season high of 572. It was a short-lived celebration as we learned that despite the Varsity's good efforts, the team only took 1 game, in a tough series. They were especially tough losses for Varsity coming just after the rough series with Sparta. The Varsity players decided to give the Sportsmanship award to Chris DiBernard of the High Point JV team. Chris did really well & has an awesome & upbeat attitude in competing. He is an inspiration to his teammates & competitors alike. - Heather Van Dyk Jefferson vs. Sparta: 1/8 Yesterday, we matched up against Sparta. Varsity did very well, yet couldn't catch a break. They shot a total of 3096 pins. The high series went to Brian Koch, with a 727 series. As for JV, they had trouble making spares & struggled throughout the match. Both teams kept their heads up & still said "good game" when the match ended. - Connor Kroll The match against Sparta was a rough match. The 1st & last Varsity games were really close. Sparta did really good with good attitudes & sportsmanship. Both teams tried really hard, but in the end Sparta won. It was a good effort from both teams. - Brittany Lassell Jefferson vs. Hopatcong: 1/3 This is Steve Tanis doing the blog for the 2nd Hopatcong match this season, which was close & a really good game. JV took their time & really stood up & took all 3 games, as did the Varsity. Everyone should go check out the Student vs. Faculty game 1/9/07. - Steve Tanis Jefferson vs. Newton: 12/20 The match against Newton didn't go as smoothly as we had hoped. Some of our players weren't there because of a wake scheduled for that afternoon. We were pumped, as we always are, but even more so because most of the subs went in. Both JV & Varsity won all three games. I think even though we were missing some players, we still had three amazing games. - Danielle VanSyckle Jefferson vs. Lenape Valley: 12/13 This was our 6th match. JV & Varsity won all 7. Together we were 14-0, so therefore it was a good day. Everyone was focused & ready to bowl. Mark had a real good day & shot a 694. JV & Varsity both moved into sole possession of 2nd place. - Craig Wallace Jefferson vs. Wallkill Valley: 12/11 With this being our 5th match of the year, we knew we could not take anyone as a joke. We knew that every team has their good days & we wished it wasn't on our bad days. When we played Wallkill, we knew we were capable of going 7-0 if we made our spares. Though we did our best, we lost one game & won the match 5-2. At the end our coach even said we should of won 7-0, but our spare shooting struggled. Nonetheless, we were 21-14 at day's end. Even though we lost that one game, we know there's still a lot of bowling left & we're ready for the challenge. - Nick Miller Jefferson vs. High Point: 12/7 This was our fourth match. Feeling really confident by taking one of the games against a good Sparta team, our team looked a lot better. Ignorance by other teammates only fueled us more and we jumped out to a good start by taking the first game. As a team, we are still trying to perfect our adjustments to the lanes, but we look to our coach for guidance. Unfortunately, we lost the second game but were able to come back strong & take the third game, along with wood. Having minor disputes after the match helped out team realize that we are a classy team & we are there to bowl. - Jose Diaz J-town Bowlas vs. Sparta 12/6 This was our third match & everybody came in focused & ready. Again, like the first two matches, we started out slow, missing our marks & not throwing quality shots like we were the match prior. So, at the end of the 1st game, coach got us pumped to bowl the second game. She told us to put game 1 behind us & that we did, coming out with a victory in the 2nd game. The 3rd game was not so good. Sparta did awesome the 3rd game, but varsity did beat them 1 of the 3 games. As a team, we decided to hand the sportsmanship award to Bijan. - Brian Koch Jefferson vs. Vernon: (12/4) This was our second match, so everyone was a little more relaxed, but some of us had a hard time adjusting to the lanes. Throughout the whole first game, we were missing our marks & everyone got frustrated, so we lost. After the first game we talked to each other about how we just needed to relax, forget the first game & beat them in the next two. We all talked to Ms. DiRupo & she told us where we should stand & throw the ball for the oil conditions on each lane. So, we took our time & worked as a team to make our strikes & spares to come back & take the win in the second & third games. - Mark Hueber Jefferson vs. Hopatcong: The first match (12/1) I'm sure I can speak for the whole team, when I say we were really nervous. All we were thinking about was how we were making history! The first match ever of Jefferson Bowling, and it was up to us to prove ourselves. I know I was especially nervous being the only girl on varsity, but I think that our team showed how supportive we are of our teammates & that we were there to stay. Our "good looks" and sportsmanship set us apart from the competition & I know that we accomplished exactly what we hoped for. I think that the first match was a complete success, not only because we won more points than Hopatcong, but because we proved ourselves to be good bowlers & good kids. I know that the entire team is excited for future matches & we definitely have what it takes to win them all. -Laur (aka Laura Ackerson) |
